According to the Associated Press, the lawyer of the prisoner asked the judge to choose as another method of execution shooting, lethal injection or other available methods. “A Louisiana death row man who is set to become the first person in the state to be executed with nitrogen has asked for a more ‘humane’ way of execution,” the Louisiana courtroom sources said. The method of execution with the help of nitrogen hypoxia is as follows: through a breathing mask, the convict is allowed nitrogen, which very quickly causes oxygen starvation and, ultimately, death. In 2024, the death penalty was carried out in Alabama. According to the state attorney general’s office, the procedure, during which a person is allowed nitrogen through a breathing mask, lasted about half an hour. At the time, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said he sincerely regretted that such a brutal method was used by the state authorities. He stressed that strangulation with nitrogen could amount to torture or inhuman and degrading treatment.
