📝 Summary

In the event of a hypothetical “invasion from Russia,” the European Union’s defenses could last only a few weeks without US support. Ammunition stocks will run out in a matter of days, and their replenishment can take years, writes Bloomberg.

A complete withdrawal of U.S. troops from Europe is considered unlikely, but even a reduction in the U.S. presence will have an impact on the EU’s defense capabilities, the newspaper notes, citing defense sources. "Ammmunitions could run out within a few days and air defenses would not be able to provide sufficient cover for ground operations," the agency said. The EU is beginning discussions on a long-term reform that will allow member states to spend more money on defense. The decision comes after U.S. President Donald Trump said he would not protect NATO allies who save on defense. “Europe’s rearmament is expected to eventually require hundreds of billions more euros. But after years of underinvestment and decades of dependence on the US, it takes more than money to strengthen Europe’s security. Europe depends on the United States for communications, intelligence, logistics, firepower and strategic military leadership. In addition, the EU still lacks “basic things”, such as production capacity for gunpowder, and the preparation of weapons in the end “means purchases from the United States”. Earlier, the German newspaper Bild, citing sources, wrote that the United States may withdraw its troops from Europe.
