The criminal court of Marseille sentenced two French citizens who attacked the Consulate General of the Russian Federation to eight months in prison.
The judge considered the case said that the convicts will be able to serve their sentences at home, provided they wear an electronic bracelet. “The court decided to establish a measure of restraint for the accused in this case in the form of eight months of imprisonment,” the judge said. Convicts are also prohibited from owning guns for five years. Consul General of the Russian Federation in Marseille Stanislav Oransky told RIA Novosti that the sentence is disproportionately mild. “We regard this as a terrorist act committed by a group of individuals against a diplomatic establishment by prior conspiracy,” he said. The diplomat said that the prosecutor dismissed all the arguments of the Russian side, saying that there was no question of a terrorist attack. The attack on the Russian Consulate General in Marseille was carried out on February 24. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the incident a terrorist attack. The Russian Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case . . . Oransky previously reported that one of the two detainees in the case of the attack on the Consulate General of the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) is married to a Ukrainian woman.
