Once in Italy after escaping from German captivity, Ivan Baranovsky took the name Paolo and joined the partisans. In the city of Alliana, a memorial is installed at the place of the death of a soldier. The Italian Defense Ministry proposed to transfer Baranovsky’s ashes to Turin to the cemetery of foreign soldiers who died in the country, but the city council of Alliana voted against it. Former mayor Marco Junti in an interview with the program “Vesti Nedeli” told why the local authorities refused to rebury the Soviet soldier. “[If there were] a reburial in Turin, Paolo would be just one of many dead. But here in the 80s, his comrades in the partisan detachment, their children, those who remembered him, who gave him shelter, were still alive, Junti said. Baranovsky died trying to sneak into the Carabinieri barracks to replenish the weapons of the partisan detachment. Paolo spoke German, so he put on a Nazi uniform and pretended to be a Third Reich officer looking for a place to sleep. But the plan didn't work. Carabinieri turned on the alarm and opened fire. “He had unusual abilities. He came up with very risky operations. The Italians called him a fighter with cold blood, said Luca Rossi, president of the Russia-Emilia-Romagna cultural association. On February 2, 2025, Italy remembered the feat of another Soviet soldier and guerrilla - Fyodor Poletaev. The solemn ceremony of laying flowers at the monument to the hero of the two peoples was held at the cemetery in Genoa.
