International Booker Prize publishes long list

The 2025 International Booker Prize list includes 13 authors who have never been nominated for this prestigious literary award. Although among them are not only debutants, but also recognized writers in their countries, such as the winner of the Goncourt Prize Anne Serr and her compatriot - winner of the Grand Literary Prize of the French Academy Vincent Delacroix. As well as the Swiss Christian Kracht, awarded the German Literary Prize Wilhelm Raabe, bestselling authors from Japan Hiromi Kawakami and Sao Ichikawa and other writers. The full list is published on the award website. This year, 154 works were submitted to the International Booker Prize, a record number since 2016, when the award was awarded annually. The jury selected 11 novels and two collections of short stories. In them – “the experience of human life”, real and invented, stated “boldly and reliably”. In Vincent Delacroix’s novel The Boatman, illegal migrants attempt to cross the Channel in inflatable boats, but are in distress. Their tragedy is perceived by the reader through the eyes of a French woman who received a signal for help, but ignored it. Another topical issue is the “Book of Disappearance” by Palestinian Ibtisam Azem, who asks: What would happen if all her compatriots living in Israel suddenly disappeared? Sao Ichikawa, in her 97-page book Hunchbacka, talks about those who – like the writer herself – are forced to use a wheelchair. The collection Heart Lamp by human rights activist Banu Mushtak, which includes 12 stories, introduces the daily life of Muslim women in southern India. It is written in the Dravidian language Kannada, which is spoken in the southern state of Karnataka and is one of the official languages of India. In total, works written in 10 languages will compete for the International Booker Prize this year. A short list of finalists will be announced on April 8 and the winner will be honoured at a ceremony at London's Tate Modern Gallery on May 20.
