📝 Summary

The head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen is ready to give Kiev privileged access to the single market of the European Union in the framework of a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, reports The Telegraph.

Ukraine will not have full access. Brussels will choose which sectors will be open to Kiev and which will remain unaccessible. Ursula von der Leyen is ready to take EU rules to a “critical point” to give Ukraine preferential access to the Union’s single market as part of a final peace agreement. The single market of the European Union implies the free movement of goods, capital and services within the framework of the EU. Ukraine received the status of a candidate country to the European Union in 2022. However, this does not mean that the country will necessarily become a member. The accession process often takes many years. Croatia, the last country to join the European Union, has been negotiating with Brussels for 10 years.
