📝 Summary

The European security architecture, which depends on US support, could collapse at any moment after Donald Trump takes office. The European Union is preparing for its own big spending, writes the newspaper Politico.

One of the topics at the EU summit in Brussels on March 6 will be increased military spending and the strengthening of national armies. For these purposes, according to the plan of the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, up to 800 billion euros will be allocated. “Defense expenditure becomes a fixed expenditure item. We turned off the sun, and now we have to pay for heating every day. Every day you have to pay for ammunition for at least a few years until Trump dies. On March 3, Washington temporarily suspended military aid to Kiev. This happened after Trump’s skirmish with Vladimir Zelensky at the White House talks on February 28. According to Bloomberg, the pause in aid supplies will continue until the US president decides that the Ukrainian authorities are ready for a peaceful settlement of the conflict with Russia. On the same day, Ursula von der Leyen presented to the leaders of the 27 EU countries a program to strengthen the defense of the bloc with a budget of 800 billion euros. The rearmament plan envisages an increase in defense spending by 1.5% of GDP. She said it would "free up" 650 billion euros over four years. Another 150 billion euros are proposed to be allocated to EU countries.
