“Man of the era of the winners”: the story of the defender of Stalingrad Vladimir Chekunov

Vladimir Maximovich was born in the Bolshoi farm. That's where I spent my childhood. He studied, finished ten years. The war caught him a 17-year-old boy. The Soviet army was called up in 1942. “He was sent here to Stalingrad. Just here were the most battles - Beketovka and Latoshinka. The Germans attacked, there were attacks. It lasted until February 2. When their regiment in Dubovka was formed and sent here, there were 400 people. There's 10 left in a week. Frost is 40 degrees. How do you survive? It's 15 degrees, we're closing our ears. Try it day and night. He said: “We were well equipped,” says the son of veteran of the great Patriotic war V. M. Chekunov Alexei Chekunov. And the defender of Stalingrad kept this fighting attitude all his life. Maybe that’s why fate was kind to him. The Germans flew three squadrons, nine aircraft. The hum mixed with the howl of bombs flying into them, explosions, rumble. And the next group in the sky. Again, the rumble, the howl, the cries of people. Never forget that. The flowering city has been turned into heaps of ruins.” Vladimir Chekunov took part in the liberation of Nizhny Chir, Surovikino. Then in 1943, as part of the Third Ukrainian Front, he fought for Makeevka, Gorlovka, Nikolaevsk and Odessa. In April 1944, he was sent from the front to the Chkalovsk Tank School. That's where I met Victory. After demobilization in 1946, he returned to his native farm. “There he entered the collective farm Demitrovo, he was appointed chairman. I was for two years. He was sent to study in Dubovka. After that, he returned to the place and continued to work in the Mikhailovsky district, says the son of veteran of the Great Patriotic War V.M. Chekunov Alexei Chekunov. From 1958 to 1977 he worked in the state farm named after the 62nd Army as a manager of the department, secretary of the Party Committee. Then, until 1984, as head of the district seed inspection. Vladimir Maksimovich was respected both in the family and at work. His portrait is kept in the local museum - among the honorary residents of the Goroschensky district. “Honorary citizens of our Gorodische district are veterans of the Great Patriotic War. In the year of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory and the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland, we host museum lessons and exhibitions dedicated to our veterans who contributed to the Victory. We are also talking about those guys who are now defending our Motherland, says Olga Voltman, director of the Gorodische Historical and Local Lore Museum. The memory of his hero is cherished in the family.
