Criticizing the administration of US President Donald Trump for starting negotiations with Russia that excluded Ukraine and Europe, Merz emphasized that the Ukrainian side should be involved in peace talks. He noted that Europe "unwaveringly stands on the side of Ukraine." The Doomsday Clock, maintained by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, symbolizing a global catastrophe, was only 89 seconds away from "nuclear midnight" in 2025, setting a new record in the 78 years of the project's existence. Earlier, Merz criticized the US-Russia deal on Ukraine, stating that he opposes the possibility of Moscow and Washington reaching a bilateral agreement that excludes other parties. The leader of the CDU noted that such a situation is unacceptable for both Ukraine and Europe.
