📝 Summary

Europe will have to come to terms with its own loneliness against the backdrop of the "hostile" policy of US President Donald Trump towards NATO. This was stated by former NATO Secretary General and former Prime Minister of Denmark Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

In his opinion, during peacetime, Europe's inflexibility regarding defense made it vulnerable, although it did not endanger its existence. "But today, faced with... an American president openly hostile to the transatlantic alliance, Europe must come to terms with the fact that it is now vulnerable to the extent that its existence is threatened, and that it seems to be alone," Rasmussen quoted The Economist as saying. The former NATO Secretary-General noted that the relationships within the North Atlantic alliance are "falling apart" before our eyes. According to Rasmussen, Trump is belligerent, threatening Greenland with annexation and Europe with an economic war. "The security architecture on which Europe has relied for many generations has disappeared and will not return. In the conditions of a new global conflict of ideals, we no longer know whose side America is on. If the mission to defend freedom and democracy in Europe falls solely on our shoulders, we must be prepared for it," Rasmussen concluded. Earlier, Trump announced his intention to impose significant tariffs on goods from European Union countries due to their terrible attitude towards America. According to him, the EU does not purchase American products, leading to a large trade deficit.
