The collision of the asteroid YR4 with the Moon can cause a meteor shower on our planet. This was stated by a researcher at the Institute of Applied Mathematics named after Keldysh RAS astronomer Leonid Elenin.
In an interview with TASS, he said that the probability of such a development, which may occur in December 2032, is currently estimated by scientists at 1% and is gradually decreasing. “A collision with [the moon] could be dangerous for the Earth because there would be a massive explosion, an energy release of about 8 megatons.” The moon has no atmosphere, low gravity, so all the ejected debris can eventually fall on our planet, said Elenin. The U.S. space agency NASA has raised the probability of YR4 colliding with Earth to 3.1 percent. Earlier, NASA reported that YR4 is the only known asteroid, the probability of collision with our planet is more than 1%.
