Photographers-divers from Moscow are working on a project in Nagaev Bay in Magadan

Magadan diver-rescuer Eduard Smaglov raises ammonite from under the water to the surface - this is an art object brought with him by photo artist Sergei Shanin. Ammonites are ancient mollusks that went extinct at the same time as the dinosaurs. This Sergey Shanin created with his own hands – all in order to photograph him in the depths of the Sea of Okhotsk. “To the underwater world, which is beautiful in itself, we as photographers add something from ourselves. The project has been going on for more than 10 years, and we have created different models. Last year, here, in Magadan, we dived and made a great photo shoot with a fish angler, said Sergey Shanin, a diver photographer, founder of the Union of Wildlife Photographers. Sergey is implementing the Paleoart project, and his colleague Denis Degtyarev is photographing the underwater world of the Sea of Okhotsk without embellishment. In recent years, Nagaev Bay cleared of sunken ships, but still those that do not interfere with navigation left to the delight of divers. Photo shoots under the ice, in one of the coldest seas in the world are always interesting. “There are few places in the world where you can see two ships lying side by side, they have grown over, they have become natural reefs, so this is really unique. The only, of course, very difficult conditions for shooting and diving, that is, it is very dark there and, well, how the technique works on the edge of its own capabilities and, as it were, all the beauty of this place can be seen only under the ice, said Denis Degtyarev, a photographer-diver. A photo shoot under the ice, when it is still quite cold in Magadan, is a forced victim. Ice adds exoticity and beauty to photos, but it’s not just that. March-April is the ideal time for diving in the Magadan Bay of Nagayev. The sea is clear, it doesn't bloom. True, and the water is quite cold, minus 2 degrees. So the mine has to be cleaned of ice every half hour. This year, for the first time, photographers-divers saw in Magadan the so-called “ice fingers of death” – brainicles. These are underwater stalactites, when touched, all living things die. In fact, brynicle is a downward stream of salt solution, having an extremely low temperature, forming an ice channel in the form of a tube. Until now, it was believed that it could only be seen in the Arctic or Antarctica. “This icy finger of death, which is formed only in Antarctica, according to the guys, and allegedly it was seen in the Arctic, but it was unexpected to see it here in Magadan, literally here near the city,” said Eduard Smaglov, a rescue diver. Eduard Smaglov is a Magadan diver-rescuer, who is now also engaged in the creative process. He became the winner of the All-Russian contest "Heroes of depth" in the nomination "Ice heart" for the popularization of Magadan diving. Together, the photographers are preparing a large album about the underwater world of the Sea of Okhotsk, which is going to be published this year.
