Seasonal ice near Magadan threatens bridges and roads

But so far these are only sources of water under the ice, said Roman Khnykin, a member of the youth organization of the RGS in the Magadan region. Roman is one of the activists of the youth organization of the Russian Geographical Society, he was attracted to work on this naledi by professional hydrographers. They have been studying it for several years, but this year the ice has surpassed all previous growth rates. The bridge over the Mikhalych stream is in emergency condition due to ice. This year it is growing unusually fast. It has already reached a height of two meters. Back in December, hydrologists easily descended under the bridge over the Mikhalych stream. Even then, they recorded unusual growth rates of naledi: the beginning of winter in Magadan was abnormally warm, the water came to the surface and froze. Drivers put up special fences to stop the destructive process. Hydrologists have installed a camera trap and watch the dynamics weekly. With a radar, they measure the thickness of the ice, recording all the changes. In February, during the next thaw, the ice has grown again fairly. “It allows us to determine the thickness of the ice on the profile, to determine the places of discharge of water, where we directly knock out the sources from the ground, which form the ice. We can also determine the depth of seasonal freezing and the place of merging permafrost. We are now in a zone just intermittent zone of perennial frozen rocks. We are observing water consumption in the autumn to understand, in fact, the difference in hydrological conditions, said Anastasia Zemlyanskova, junior researcher, Candidate of Technical Sciences of Northeastern State University. Such ice, threatening bridges and roads, in the Magadan region a lot. Now scientists follow them, describe the processes affecting them. In the future, they intend to give recommendations to combat the active growth of ice – timely clearing of the channel, installation of fences.
