The Mariinsky Theatre has updated the opera “The Death of the Gods”

The opera "The Death of the Gods" completed the tetralogy "The Ring of Nibelung" at the Wagner Festival at the Bolshoi Theatre. The updated 2009 performance was presented by Mariinka. Advanced technologies are used here not to modernize the myth, but, on the contrary, to emphasize its relevance. Anastasia Pavlova shares her impressions. These words particularly accurately describe the last opera of the series – “The Death of the Gods”. “Today I am probably the only performer in Russia, a tenor who sang all the Wagnerian roles,” says the soloist of the Mariinsky Opera Company Mikhail Vekua. Wagner's music is already centered on drama, critics write. The score contains hundreds of already known leitmotifs for those who have heard the previous parts of the tetralogy. Richard Wagner’s music demands incredible endurance and skill from the performers and orchestra. The opera lasts five and a half hours. Richard Wagner's paintings, I can't call them anything else, are different. And the canvas – “Death of the Gods” – which is performed today, is not difficult to sing at all. I can sing it twice in a row, because there the music gives a charge of energy, it is very energetic, strong, heavy, like a whirlwind, as a natural phenomenon, says the soloist of the Mariinsky Opera Company Mikhail Petrenko. The Death of the Gods is a philosophical parable embodied in music. The story of gods, heroes and fatal passions, the inevitability of fate and the price of power. The opera was first staged at the end of the XIX century in the German Bayreuth. To embody the ideas of the composer, a whole theater was built then - but there was not enough space for Wagner's productions. The composer composed scenes for much greater possibilities of the theater than could be embodied in the XIX century. The Mariinsky Theatre combines Wagnerian monumentality with modern visual language. The sets, the lights, the costumes all work to create a new universe. “This is the cosmic universe, and the orchestra of Valery Abisalovich carries us on its wings. Our theater specializes in Wagner, we are number one in Russia in the performance of this style, genre. So we have a certain tradition, there are coaches who work with us in this style. We understand what we are doing, how we should do it. And we listen carefully to what the orchestra offers, as the maestro leads us, said Tatiana Pavlovskaya, Honored Artist of Russia. Each performance of the saga "The Ring of Nibelung" became an event on these tours. "The Death of the Gods" is a finale that makes you think about the eternal, the cost of choice, and the fact that even the gods have no power over fate.
