The composer worked on the score for three years. He planned the opera in four acts, but never finished it. As a member of the Mighty Bunch, he didn't even show the sketches to his colleagues. At the musical evenings of the Kuchkistas, not a single fragment of Salambo was ever performed. Obsessed with the work of Mussorgsky, Valery Gergiev turned to Salambo in the 89th. By order of the Mariinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg composer Vyacheslav Nagovitsyn made his editorial. In the new performance, a fragment from the opera "Boris Godunov" was added. The duet of Mirina Mnishek with the Jesuit Rangoni was transferred to the duet of Salambo and Shagabarim. The plot is based on the story of the forbidden love of the priestess Salambo and the leader of the rebel Libyan mercenaries Mato. It will end in tragedy. Heroes will die. This music fits seamlessly into this musical fabric of Salambo and even the accent, yes, Marina – Salambo – it matches. And, in this sense, there is such an idea that Mussorgsky wrote it initially for his Carthaginian opera later, commented director Sergey Novikov. The exotic world of Salambo was created by artist Rostislav Protasov. It wasn’t just Flaubert’s novel that inspired him. “It’s a legend, it’s a fairy tale, and if it’s a fairy tale, it’s already some kind of fairy-tale world of its own, which allows you to push back from today’s life and go into some beautiful dreams,” says production designer Rostislav Protasov. Valery Gergiev plans to show a new version of Salambo in the homeland of Mussorgsky. We set ourselves the task of performing in the homeland of Mussorgsky – today it is the Pskov region.
