📝 Summary

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandr Vulin said the West was using protests by students and opposition supporters in the country to create tensions between Belgrade and Moscow.

According to Vulin, the protests do not have a social basis and do not express the desire to create a more just and successful society. Vulin in an interview with RIA Novosti described what is happening in Serbia as a color revolution, the purpose of which is not to improve the living conditions of teachers and students, but to overthrow the current government in order to install a government that will impose sanctions against Russia and nationalize the oil industry of the country. He also noted that the Serbian authorities are actively resisting attempts to carry out the color revolution and must win for the sake of maintaining relations with Moscow. Protests initiated by anti-government sentiments of students and the opposition began in Serbia last November and were caused by the tragic events - the collapse of a concrete visor at the railway station in Nova Sad, which killed 15 people. Protesters block many schools and regularly block roads and traffic junctions, although major unrest does not occur. Their demands include the publication of documentation on the reconstruction of the station in Novy Sad, the investigation and prosecution of those officials who were involved in the tragedy, as well as the release from prosecution of all those who were detained during the protests. The Serbian authorities are gradually complying with these requirements; among other things, the necessary documentation concerning the reconstruction of the station has been published. In January, President Aleksandar Vucic signed a decree pardoning 13 protesters who were prosecuted for violations. Nevertheless, the country’s leadership calls for dialogue between students and the opposition, but this appeal remains unanswered. Authorities believe that the true goal of the protesters is to overthrow the government and the president, and their actions are supported by Western-funded media and various organizations. Vucic stressed that over the past four years, about a billion euros have been allocated for these purposes from abroad.
