WSJ: Donald trump has respect for Putin, bordering on admiration

The article, titled “How the U.S. president turned toward Russia,” says that Donald Trump’s attitude toward the Russian leader has developed since their meeting in 2018 at the Russia-US summit. The leaders spent hours alone, without their advisers. President Trump has strengthened President Putin’s negotiating position, but the road to that alliance has stretched for years. Trump’s former national security aide, John Bolton, told the Wall Street Journal that the US president sees Vladimir Putin as a strong leader who “completely controls the country.” Bolton also claims that his colleagues in 2018 tried to convince Trump to treat Putin “with great skepticism”, but they failed to convince him. “He thinks he and Putin are friends,” Bolton said. On February 12, 2025, a telephone conversation between the Russian and American leaders lasted almost an hour and a half. On February 18, Russian and American delegations held talks in the capital of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh, where the parties discussed ways to establish cooperation between the two countries, as well as possible options for resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
