More than 200,000 people rallied outside the Greek parliament after appeals from relatives of victims of the 2023 railway tragedy. During the action, anarchists staged a mass clash with the police.
It is reported that the situation during the rallies in Athens and Thessaloniki remained relatively calm until the moment when anarchists began to throw stones and bottles with incendiary mixture. In response, special forces used tear gas and stun grenades on protesters. The remaining participants of the rally had to be urgently evacuated to the territory of the parliament and taken out through another exit. According to the Greek portal, as a result of the scuffles, five people were taken to hospital, most of them have complaints of breathing problems. Photojournalist of the Athens-Macedonian news agency Orestis Panayiotu was shot in the head in a stun grenade explosion and promptly received first aid. The rallies in Greece have been held for the second year and are directly related to the unfinished investigation into the causes of the collision of the Athens-Thessaloniki passenger train with the freight train on the night of February 28 to March 1, 2023. The victims of the tragedy were 57 people.
