Cardiac surgeons of Chelyabinsk rescued children from the SVO zone with a rare heart defect

Skin color for children diagnosed as Sasha is an indicator of how little oxygen the blood carries. Eleven-year-old Maxim in the cardio center in general brought blue, say doctors. He, like Alexandra, has the so-called transposition of the main vessels. Simply put, the artery and vein switched places. And venous blood, having collected carbon dioxide from all over the body, goes not to the lungs to be enriched with oxygen, but directly to the heart. “Blood flows poorly because blue blood enters the systemic bloodstream and red blood enters the pulmonary artery, and it should be the other way around.” “A man lived to the age of 11 and had not had a day of normal hemodynamics. This is very bad, gives serious complications for everything: for the liver, for the kidneys, for the lungs, says Igor Gladyshev, head of the Department of Surgery of Congenital and Acquired Heart Diseases of the Federal Center for Healthcare. Maxim and Sasha also had pulmonary arteries narrowed to such an extent that blood flow through them almost did not go. And instead of their vessels children put donor, so-called homographs. The operations lasted six hours. Maxim celebrated his 12th anniversary in the intensive care of the cardio center when he recovered. Usually, cardiac surgeons correct the transposition immediately after birth, while the body has not yet suffered. But Sasha and Maxim were born and grew up in the Kherson region, where there were no necessary specialists. “There have been no cardiac surgery centres there historically, so the entire routing of care needs to be restructured now. All organizational issues upon arrival and so on are taken over by the “Turryuzovy” Foundation, and we, as a federal institution, because these are all citizens of the Russian Federation, they have the same right to provide high-tech medical care, emphasizes the chief doctor of the Federal Center for Cardiovascular Surgery Oleg Lukin. Representatives of the charitable foundation, by the way, also doctors, in one of their trips to the SVO zone learned that in the new Russian region there are children who need urgent cardio surgeries. We went to their parents and called to Chelyabinsk. “We build logistics so that representatives of the Ministry of Health will take them to the railway station in the Crimea, then we buy them tickets as the fund already, and they come to Chelyabinsk,” says the founder of the charitable foundation “Turkey” Kirill Chiglintsev. Today, Sasha and Maxim go home and learn to breathe in a new, full-bodied way. Meanwhile, representatives of the Fund received information that in the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions heart surgery is needed for seven more children. And now work will begin on their removal from the SVO zone.
