📝 Summary

Forest fires in dozens of regions of Russia can begin in March. This was warned on the air of the TV channel “Russia 24” meteorologist Ekaterina Ryazanova.

According to her, the main reason for this was an abnormally warm and snowy winter, which left the soil dry. At risk are 30 regions of the country. Due to the prevailing weather conditions, forest fires this spring threaten five federal districts: from the Far East to the Caucasus. “This winter has been one of the warmest in the last decade. In December and January, in many regions, including central Russia, the south and the Far East, precipitation fell by 30-40% less than normal. This led to an early descent of snow cover and drying of the soil, explains the specialist. According to the Federal Air Forestry Agency, this situation creates ideal conditions for the rapid spread of fire in the first spring months. In March, wildfires may begin in the south of European Russia. Including in the Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics, Kalmykia, Adygea, Astrakhan and Rostov regions, as well as in the North Caucasus and Kuban, the meteorologist listed. The situation in April can be complicated by clear and dry weather in anticyclone conditions. “The sun’s rays in the middle of spring will already have a sufficient supply of energy. And taking into account the fact that snow in the middle band during the winter accumulated little, all the energy will go to warm the surface. This means that the soil will lose even more moisture, Ryazanova said. The fire hazard is forecast to reach extreme levels in May. “Eight federal districts will be at risk. The greatest threat is in the northwest and center of the country, as well as in Siberia. The list of areas with a high risk of fires includes Leningrad, Moscow, Vologda, Tver regions, Altai Krai, Primorye, Transbaikalia and dozens of other regions, the expert warns. The predominant number of fires in the flowering season is due to the negligence of people, Ryazanova believes. “Nine out of ten spring fires are man-made: as soon as the snow clears, people start burning dry grass. In the May holidays, many go to nature, make fires. Now the regional authorities are stepping up monitoring and preparing forces for a rapid response: increasing the number of patrols, checking equipment. For example, in the Khabarovsk Territory, drones will be used to fight forest fires. This year, the region will receive 48 domestic drones, the expert said. According to Air Forestry, the fire season has already opened in two regions of the country: throughout the Krasnodar Territory and in some areas of Primorye. Since the beginning of 2025, forest services have extinguished nine foci of forest fires, a meteorologist said. She concluded that the situation can save heavy spring rains, otherwise the country is waiting for a rather difficult fire season.
