Hill: Europe has several retaliatory measures on US tariffs

Among the tools of possible EU pressure on the United States adopted at the end of 2023, the so-called Regulations on combating coercion, which allows you to respond to attempts of pressure from third countries, writes the American edition of The Hill. This document provides for measures against companies and individuals that may encourage the authorities of a third country to take such actions. In the case of the introduction of US duties on European goods, the EU retaliatory measures may affect, in particular, Elon Musk and his Tesla company, the author of the article suggests. Another powerful tool in the EU’s arsenal is access to public procurement. The ban on the participation of American companies in public procurement of the European Union will cost Washington two billion euros, the article says. Brussels also has the option of introducing “unconventional retaliatory measures” that Canada, Mexico and Japan could join. On February 11, US President Donald Trump signed a decree imposing duties on steel and aluminum imports in the amount of 25% for all foreign suppliers. French President Emmanuel Macron urged the head of the White House not to harm the European Union with its tariff policy. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, for his part, said Trump’s promises to impose tariffs on EU goods should be treated “with concern, but without fear.” Economically, Warsaw can counter such threats from Washington. It will be difficult for Europeans to respond to the trade war with the United States, Alexander Losev, a financier and member of the Presidium of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, suggested on the air of Vesti FM radio. He noted that the United States has long reduced the volume of merchandise exports, and European countries are now experiencing deindustrialization.
