📝 Summary

Israel has agreed to the proposal of the special envoy of the President of the United States Stephen Whitkoff to extend the ceasefire with Hamas during the holy month of Ramadan and the Jewish holiday of Passover, said the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

A statement from Netanyahu’s office said Hamas had not yet accepted the plan. The comments followed a Netanyahu-led government meeting that came minutes after the end of the 42-day period of the first phase of the ceasefire in Gaza. This was reported by the Times of Israel. According to Israeli authorities, half of the hostages held in the Gaza Strip should be released on the first day of implementation of the updated agreement. At the same time, the Jewish state expects the transfer of half of the total number of Israelis killed in the Palestinian enclave. The remaining captives will be returned subject to a permanent ceasefire. At the same time, Hamas must complete the transfer of the bodies of Israeli citizens. The Prime Minister’s Office noted that Whitcoff proposed an extension of the ceasefire, since at this stage it is impossible to bring the positions of the parties closer to an end to the conflict. It is noted that the special envoy of trump made sure that the disagreement on the complete cessation of hostilities has not yet been resolved. If Hamas changes its position, Israel will immediately begin negotiations on the details of the Whitcoff plan. The Times of Israel concluded in the statement that there was no direct threat of a resumption of war, but recalled the possibility of a resumption of hostilities after March 1 "if the negotiations are recognized as ineffective." Ramadan began on the evening of February 28, will last until March 29, the holiday of Passover will end on April 19. Earlier, the Israeli portal Ynet reported that Netanyahu sent his military secretary, Major General Roman Hoffman, to Moscow for talks. Journalists assumed that the Jewish state will ask Russia for possible assistance in the release of the hostages.
