📝 Summary

The leaders of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) declared a ceasefire. They will lay down their arms, as the founder of the organization, Abdullah Ocalan, wished. This was reported by the Turkish TV channel AHaber.

Ocalan called on PKK members to lay down their arms and dissolve the organization. The party committee decided to support this course. “We agree with the content of [Ocalan’s] appeal and declare that we will respect and comply with its requirements. We announce a ceasefire starting Saturday, the PKK committee said in a statement. The founder and leader of the party, Abdullah Öcalan, began an armed struggle against Turkey in 1984. He was arrested in 1999 and sentenced to life imprisonment. Earlier it was reported that 75-year-old Öcalan called on his colleagues to lay down their arms due to the fact that he sees prospects only in democratic dialogue. The Turkish government expects the dissolution of the PKK to take two to three months, CNN Türk reported. “A new page of history without terror has opened in Turkey,” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a statement. Kurdish militias are ready to lay down their arms if they are allowed to conduct political activity in Turkey.
