Opera "Lohengrin" performed at the festival of Richard Wagner in the Bolshoi

The Richard Wagner Festival at the Bolshoi Theatre continued the opera Lohengrin. Director François Girard’s production is a joint project of the Bolshoi and the Metropolitan Opera. Behind the conductor's desk is Valery Gergiev, a play about the legendary knight of the Holy Grail was seen by Jennett Arlt. As such, there is no grail in the play, but there is a future after the apocalypse. The production in the spirit of modern fantasy films is like the confrontation of the forces of good and evil. Insidious Ortrude, along with her husband, accuse an innocent girl Elsa of fratricide, her fate will be decided by a knightly duel. Elsa's savior will be Lohengrin. In the classic version – the Knight of the Holy Grail, here – the creation of another dimension, literally descended from heaven. “Lohengrin, he is not from our world after all. This is decided astronomically, literally. He flies to our planet, explains soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre Opera Company, guest soloist of the Bolshoi Theatre’s opera troupe Mikhail Petrenko. The visual range is a minimum of scenery, symbolism, a mixture of historical and modern. Lohengrin is not a mighty knight in armor, but a hero in a snow-white shirt. His antagonist, Ortrude, is in red. “It has some pagan, say, costume elements, that is, some feathers, beads, amulets, which any, let’s say, a sorceress uses to predict or see something,” explains the soloist of the Mariinsky Opera Company, a guest soloist of the Bolshoi Theatre’s opera troupe Yulia Matochkina. The inhabitants of Brabant (aka the choir) are dressed in black cloaks that change color: Green - King Henry and justice, red - the color of Ortrude, envy and malice, white belongs to Lohengrin and Elsa - a symbol of faith, truth and purity. Elsa is an elf, so unreal some princess. She is accused of what she did not do, and she is even so kind and so pure that she cannot justify herself, says Irina Churilova, a soloist of the Mariinsky Opera Company, a guest soloist of the Bolshoi Opera Company. Sergey Skorokhodov has performed the role of Lohengrin for more than 15 years, in various theaters and countries. He sang at the Big Three premiere three years ago. It is believed that Lohengrin’s tragic loneliness reminded Wagner of his own destiny – the path of an artist who carried high ideals to people, but met with misunderstanding and envy. He rewrote the end of the opera many times and wanted to do it with a happy ending, but it didn’t work. The struggle between good and evil will end in the victory of the light forces, but according to Wagner, harmony in this world is still impossible. The Wagner Festival at the Bolshoi Theatre will end in March with the tetralogy “The Ring of Nibelung” performed by artists and the Mariinsky Theatre orchestra.
