On Tuesday, Humberside police said one person had been detained on suspicion of causing death by negligence over a collision between the tanker Stena Immaculate and the Portuguese container ship Solong off the British coast. The cargo ship, which collided with an American tanker, was carrying alcohol and 15 containers of poisonous sodium cyanide. The tanker was loaded with jet fuel for the U.S. Army. Police arrested a 59-year-old man, the captain of a container ship. According to Solongβs owner, Ernst Russ, the captain of the Portuguese-flagged vessel is Russian, and the rest of the crew consists of citizens of Russia and the Philippines. The Stena Immaculate was anchored when a smaller bulk carrier crashed into it. The accident resulted in fire and explosions, one crew member is believed to have died.
