Former President of Azerbaijan, twice Hero of Socialist Labor Heydar Aliyev made a significant contribution to the construction of the Baikal-Amur Railway. In Moscow near the Embassy of Azerbaijan laid a monument to the former President of the Republic Heydar Aliyev. The ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Saveliev, who noted the significant contribution of the twice Hero of Socialist Labor to the creation of the BAM. “He certainly wrote himself in golden letters in the history of the BAM. Heydar Aliyevych – not only supervised this construction site, he lived in this construction site, said the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia. The initiators of the monument were veterans of the construction of the Baikal-Amur highway, who worked under the leadership of Heydar Aliyev. “It was necessary not only to build a road with a length of four thousand kilometers, but also to master the territory of the BAM, and this is a zone under which about a third of Russia’s natural resources, the entire table of Mendeleev lies,” said Efim Basin, Honored Builder of Russia, Hero of Socialist Labor. The national leader of Azerbaijan has been the president of the republic since 1993. In 2003, he accepted the candidacy, but due to health problems withdrew it in favor of his son, the current President Ilham Aliyev. In 2024, during his visit to Azerbaijan, Russian leader Vladimir Putin laid flowers at the grave of Heydar Aliyev.
