SCMP: China has created the world’s first engine to fly at Mach 16

The engine with oblique detonation (ODE – Open dynamics engine) runs on ordinary aviation kerosene. The jet engine used RP-3 jet fuel, which is conventional aviation kerosene. “This could be a potential breakthrough in hypersonic propulsion, potentially changing the limits of air and space travel,” the Chinese newspaper said. Another know-how of Chinese developers is the 5-millimeter protrusions on the inner surface of the combustion chamber of a hypersonic jet engine, which are the initiators and amplifiers of self-sustaining detonation of the fuel mixture. The combustion chamber of the new engine is 85% shorter than that of the traditional direct-flow engine. In tests, the hypersonic engine operated for 50 milliseconds, at Mach 16, which corresponds to about 225 meters of rocket flight. Chinese engineers solved the problem of long ignition delays that create difficulties when starting the engine in flight. They introduced a system of injection of pre-compressed and heated fuel-air mixture directly into the combustion chamber. Flight tests of the first prototypes of the new hypersonic jet engine will begin in China this year. Tests of the Chinese hypersonic novelty took place in Beijing, in the wind tunnel JF-12, which is called "Hyperdragon". It simulated high-speed flight conditions at altitudes of over 40 kilometers. Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences have achieved stable oblique detonation waves during tests of a jet turbine. The combustion rate of this engine was 1000 times higher than that of traditional ramjet engines. This will ensure the rocket flight at a speed of 19.5 thousand kilometers per hour. The study was published in the Journal of Experiments in Fluid Mechanics. The publication notes that conventional air-jet engines with the task of operating in the range of Mach 6 to Mach 16 can not cope. Mach is the speed of sound in the air. It's just below 1,192 kilometers per hour. Development of hypersonic jet engines are several countries of the world. Among them are Russia and the United States, China, France, Iran, Japan, Australia and North Korea.
