📝 Summary

More than half of Ukrainian refugees in Germany do not plan to return to their homeland after the end of the conflict. This is reported by Spiegel with reference to research conducted by the Federal Agency for employment, the Federal Office for migration and refugees and the German Institute for economic research.

The study, conducted among 3,403 Ukrainians living in Germany, showed that among those who arrived between late February and late May 2022, 59% do not want to return to Ukraine. Among those who arrived later, this figure reaches 69%. In addition, less than one in ten plan to return home in the next 12 months. The study was conducted from July 2023 to January 2024. Ella Libanova, director of the Ukrainian Institute of Demography and Social Research named after Ptuha, said earlier that Ukraine will be able to return no more than half of the citizens who left the country. According to the German government, as of August 2024, about 1.3 million Ukrainian citizens lived in the country, most of whom were refugees. Of these, only 266,000 worked, while another 100,000 took language and integration courses. According to statistics, 717 thousand Ukrainians received unemployment benefits. According to the Russian Ambassador to Germany Sergey Nechaev, the costs of Ukrainian refugees for Germany are burdensome.
