In October 2023, she was diagnosed with adrenocortical cancer (malignant adrenal tumor), according to the agency France 24. Her career began with a successful first film role in 1999; she starred in the Dardenne brothers' Rosetta. The film was awarded the Palme d'Or at Cannes, and Dekenne received the award for Best Actress in the film (at the time of filming she was 17 years old).
