The exhibition of book illustrations by Tatiana Mavrina opened in the Open Club gallery. Mavrina was the first in the Soviet Union to receive the Andersen Prize, a prestigious award in children’s book publishing. In the colorful world of the artist visited Aliya Sharifullina. Tatiana Mavrina – “lady of the highest color”. He has triumphant, desperate, dashing, perhaps the most striking in all painting of the Soviet period. Too bright for the gray domestic reality. The color of Mavrina is from her beloved Matisse and Chagall, from the icon, lubok, folk craft, from nature, but above all from herself - temperament and character, no less freedom-loving and bright. The artist lived the Russian twentieth century with its tragedies and hardships, without losing energy and optimism, without changing her interests and conscience. It was said about her that, therefore, her illustrations are not graphic, but pictorial. Since she was educated at VHUTEMAS, and she had a graduate class at Falk, and she, therefore, is a painter in the diploma. And therefore, it means that this is behind it, says the curator of the exhibition Alexander Sheludchenko. In the late 20s, Mavrina joined the Thirteen group, whose members relied on “painting quickly, at the tempo of nature, without correction.” She experimented with “nudes” – completely Parisian in spirit nude portraits. And in the 30s, when the persecution of formalists began, Mavrina took a decisive step towards a very "quiet art." In the book graphics - the harbor, which then saved many. Illustrated Balzac, Maupassant, Stendhal, Hoffmann, the publication of which in those years in the Soviet Union did not dare to dream. “Behind this brightness of late Mavrina is a school of incredible graphics, which she attended here with her fellow bandmates Thirteen.” And hard times, when there were all sorts of bans, when censorship simply closed books. And there are unreleased books, says Vadim Ginzburg, founder of the Open Club Gallery. The exhibition presents works from the collection of Alexander Sheludchenko. Almost a hundred works of book graphics: from early works to post-war illustrations to Russian folk tales. After the great Patriotic artist with his head went into folk art. Carvings on windows, tiles, spinning wheels, clay toys, gingerbread boards - this was her personal laboratory of flower studies, a reference book on iconography. “Internal emigration into a fairy tale has occurred. Such a way out of the captivity of censorship, editorial clutches in which she could not feel free. And in the fairy tale, it was possible to somehow show more imagination, said Alexander Sheludchenko, curator of the exhibition. The epic heroes and lush beauties, naive, folk and in many ways ancient Russian subjects, perhaps, would not have been without trips to ancient Russian cities. Zvenigorod, Uglich, Yaroslavl, Rostov – Mavrina wanted “to look at everything in a different way, not in Vkhutemasov’s way, with the cheerful eyes of the Trans-Volga artisans; to depict not still lifes, but life itself, how it flows and flows without a trace, if it is not painted.”.
