📝 Summary

Scammers are increasingly using schemes that are carried out through attacks on banking APIs and public Wi-Fi networks, malicious browser extensions, as well as through voice assistants and fake cybersecurity applications. This was told to RT by the head of cyber security Edge Center Maxim Bolshakov.

According to the expert, using attacks on banking APIs, attackers find weaknesses in the programming interfaces that banks use to communicate with other systems. These vulnerabilities allow fraudsters to access customer data or modify transactions. Another fraudulent scheme is malicious browser extensions, Bolshakov added. Criminals create extensions that at first glance may seem useful, and after installing them, they intercept information on banking sites and redirect money to their accounts, the analyst said. Another tool for implementing a fraudulent scheme is voice assistants. According to Bolshakov, with the growing popularity of this technology, scammers began to use voice imitation. Criminals can activate devices and give financial commands, the expert added. Bolshakov also warned that criminals can carry out attacks through public Wi-Fi networks. In addition, according to the analyst, scammers create fake cybersecurity applications that allow them to steal passwords and personal data of citizens. Another scheme, according to the expert, are modified charging stations, which attackers reconfigure and when connected to a phone through a USB port can steal data or install malware. The expert also warned that fraudsters create fake cryptocurrency wallets, where they use keys entered by users and then steal funds. Fraudsters, according to Bolshakov, use 3D printers to create copies of biometric fingerprints to steal users’ funds from accounts, bypassing the protection of banking systems. A cybersecurity expert has advised users to charge devices through adapters without data transfer, create complex passwords, download apps only from official stores or trusted sources, and apply multi-factor authentication and check their accounts for data leaks.
