On March 6, 2025, at the initiative of EU President António Costa, an emergency summit will be held to discuss the provision of a new package of financial and military assistance to Kiev. Slovakia's Prime Minister Fico, who has previously voiced anger over Kiev's policies, has threatened to block the summit's decision unless it includes a ceasefire and the restoration of gas transit to Europe. I insist that if Zelensky does not start gas transit through Ukraine again – whether it is Slovak gas or another – and does not allow gas to go to Slovakia, I will exercise my right and vote in the European Council. And so I will block financial assistance to Ukraine as such, Fico said in a video message posted on social networks. In early 2025, Kiev refused to extend the contract for the transit of Russian gas to Europe, despite the fact that Moscow has repeatedly confirmed its readiness to continue supplies. Thus, Slovakia was left without gas.
