"Ice. North. Petrograd" is the third concert of the "Topology of Elements" series. This is a project of the "New Music Studio" dedicated to the compositions of contemporary composers. Anastasia Pavlova found out why the performers call their performances a "journey through cities and elements." The ensemble of soloists "New Music Studio" is the only Russian musical group invited to the Venice Biennale of Contemporary Art. They are one of the leading interpreters of contemporary music, performing for over 30 years. The piece being performed is by the Austrian composer Georg Haas. "Beautiful music, because it reveals the timbral possibilities of the instruments, and when four string instruments play together, it creates a very wide range of sounds, and I think our audience should be very pleased today," shares violist Anna Burchik. The musicians of the ensemble are not just performers, but also co-researchers. They often work directly with composers, immersing themselves in their creative process. For example, Christian Jurg is known for requiring performers to incorporate acting into the process, and the "New Music Studio" is open to such experiments, turning the concert into a performance. "Ice. North. Petrograd" is a triptych concert that connects three key ideas: State of Water, Direction, City. The postmodernist music dedicated to the concert is often based on playing with contrasts and dialogue between tradition and innovation. This is just one concert from a whole series dedicated to contemporary works. "Despite the fact that it seems like an easy journey through elements and cities, all of this is a way to present the complex material of contemporary music to the listeners. Our subscribers fill the halls. Although, for example, when we introduced it, I had serious doubts," says the series author Fedor Sofronov. Ice is a hexagonal crystal that takes on different forms: icicles, frost, hoarfrost, snow. Petrograd is the name of a city that existed for only 10 years. This concert is a journey through elements, time, and space, where each note becomes a bridge between nature, the city, and the human.
