In Moscow opened an exhibition about the banned performance of Peter Fomenko

In the Winter Garden of the Fomenko Workshop, an exhibition "New Mystery-Buff" was opened, dedicated to the banned performance of the master. The production of Mayakovsky’s play, which Fomenko prepared for the 50th anniversary of Soviet power in 67, never saw the scene, and the director was excommunicated for several years. This is the prologue written by Mark Rozovsky for Peter Fomenko's The New Mystery Buff, based on Mayakovsky's play, a legendary forbidden play. Peter Fomenko was invited to the theater of the Leningrad Soviet to make a production for the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution. There is 20% of Mayakovsky’s text, 80% of my text. Well, a joke. Buff. I did buff! – said the director, People’s Artist of Russia Mark Rozovsky. "Sip of Freedom," "Feast of Director's Thought." A unique case in the Soviet theater of the 60s is a production in the genre of political cabaret. “Apparently staged. He and Rozovsky went into all seriousness. One use of a fire curtain that creaked, puffed and so on. He was beaten, knocked. It all started with this, shared the artistic director of the Peter Fomenko Workshop Theatre, Evgeny Kamenkovych. The performance was not allowed to the premiere. There are no photos left – neither from rehearsals nor from shows. Materials for this exhibition were collected with great difficulty. “I collect a little theatrical graphics. And one day at one of the auctions, I came across these Diment sketches. I saw them for sale. Nobody bought them. They did not cost crazy money, but I turned to the director of the theater Andrei Mikhailovich Vorobyov, and he supported this initiative, said: yes, let’s buy it, our theater needs it, – said the curator of the exhibition Vladimir Brovkin. Sketches of scenery and costumes, photos of actors, the author's copy of the play, a poster - this is all that remains. Fomenko tried to pass the play six times: he rewrote the text, remade the mise-en-scene. No success. With the last, sixth change, everyone was kicked out, checked if there were any people left under the chairs. The unreleased performance is documented in detail. Mayakovsky now has no way of explaining what he meant when he proposed changing the contents of Mystery-Buff and making it modern, present, momentary. And the theater took over the mystery. Infinitely important and fruitful”. Transcripts of discussions became material for performance. The actors of Peter Fomenko’s Workshop played these texts. The audience laughed a lot. The language and arguments of another era sometimes sound like a joke. But when you know the sad result – Pyotr Fomenko for several years was excommunicated from the profession – it becomes uncomfortable.
