📝 Summary

Japan does not rule out the possibility that Russia may return to the Group of Seven, but this issue can be resolved only after the end of the conflict in Ukraine. This was stated by Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya.

He noted that for Russia to return to the G7, it is necessary to reach an agreement with all other members of the association (the “seven” includes the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Canada, the United States, France and Japan). As far as I remember, Russian Foreign Minister [Sergei Lavrov] noted that Russia is not interested in the G7. Now all countries are watching how and whether Russia will end the Ukraine conflict. We cannot decide what to do with the return to the G7 until the Ukrainian issue is resolved, Takeshi Iwaya told the newspaper during a meeting of G20 foreign ministers. Russia is much more interesting than the G20 than the G7. "Twenty" better reflects world economic realities, said the press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov. And the head of state himself said that during Russia’s participation in the “eight” there were cases when the “seven” gathered separately from the Russian Federation. You come to the same eight, and it becomes clear that before the meeting in the framework of the eight already gathered “seven” and among themselves discussed something, including in relation to Russia. And then they invite Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a speech at the Valdai Club meeting. Valdai expert and Deputy Director of the Center for Integrated European and International Studies (CCEMI) HSE Dmitry Suslov told Izvestia that if Russia wants to return to the G7 after the end of the Ukrainian conflict, Japan can support this decision. US President Donald Trump, in turn, advocates the return of Russia to the “Big seven”. He believes that the expulsion of Russia from the organization in 2014 was a mistake. But other leaders of the participating countries do not support the initiative of the American leader. Canada and Germany are categorically against Russia’s return to the “seven”. Russia was invited to participate in the G7 meetings in 1997, but in 2014 was expelled from the association due to the reunification of Crimea with Russia.
