📝 Summary

The head of the Latvian Ministry of Internal Affairs, Richard Kozlovskis, said that the European Union needs to stop issuing tourist Schengen visas to Russians, writes Delfi.

Kozlowskis argues that EU countries should “seriously understand the danger” of “hybrid warfare.” “In Latvia, this affects the day-to-day work of security agencies both at the border and within the country,” he said. Latvia faces “illegal border violators and acts of sabotage,” Kozlovskis said. Among other things, he mentioned attempts to “influence public opinion”, the crossing of borders by drones and the burning of the museum of occupation. Latvia stopped issuing tourist Schengen visas to Russians after the start of a special operation in Ukraine. At the same time, Russians with a tourist Schengen can come to the country from other EU states and return through Latvia to the Russian Federation. According to Delfi, in 2024, Russians received about 565,000 Schengen tourist visas, 90% of them for tourism, which is 25% more than in 2023. In December last year, the Association of Tour Operators of Russia reported that checks of Russian applications for tourist visas have become tougher, and to refuse to issue Schengen visas to Russian citizens have become more frequent.
