Politico: von der Leyen increasingly controls the EU

The newspaper notes that von der Leyen rules almost as president - alone. She and her advisers tightly control all communications within the EU, without taking into account the decisions of the European Parliament. “All political decisions are made at the level of the president,” Politico quoted a non-EU ambassador as saying. Some European officials described cases that vividly showed von der Leyen’s attempt to rule alone. One of them occurred on January 20 – the day of the inauguration of US President Donald Trump. Then the advisers of the European commissioners were allowed to make only reposts of the messages of the head of the EC with congratulations on social networks, without adding anything from themselves. The second incident occurred in January, when von der Leyen contracted pneumonia. She did not hand over control of the European Union to a deputy and the presentation of the community's plan for economic recovery was postponed until the end of the month. It is noteworthy that the representative of the EC Stefan de Keersmacker disagrees with the statements of officials about the soleness of the management of the head of the Commission. He said von der Leyen "respects cooperation as a guiding principle." However, some European diplomats think otherwise. They are convinced that secrecy and control can be the biggest weaknesses of the head of the EC. The interlocutors of the publication expressed the opinion that no geopolitical challenges and events in the world, such as the coronavirus and the Ukrainian conflict, should lead to the centralization of power.
