Protesters in Belgrade start detonating firecrackers outside Assembly building

The protests began on March 15 at the Brankov Bridge over the Sava River in central Belgrade. Protesters gathered at 17:00 in the square in front of the Assembly building. From 19:30, groups of sports-looking young people began arriving at the building, many of whom wore hoods and masks, Serbian media reported. At the building of the Assembly thundered explosions from firecrackers, a crowd of people pushing on the police cordons. “In some places in Belgrade, there were fights between protesters and police officers, protesters tried to prevent police from performing their duties and intended to cause riots,” the Serbian Interior Ministry said. Police issued a final warning to the instigators of the unrest. If the riots do not stop, the police will begin military action. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said Saturday’s protest was not coordinated with authorities and police would detain anyone who tried to stir up unrest.
