At the age of 88, one of the world’s most productive blood donors, James Harrison, has died. This is reported by the channel 9news.
By donating his rare plasma, James Harrison has saved the lives of more than 2 million babies worldwide. The blood of an Australian man, often referred to as the man with the golden hand, contained a rare antibody called Anti-D. It is used to make medicines that are prescribed to pregnant mothers to prevent hemolytic disease of the fetus or newborn baby. The Australian first donated at the age of 18 and continued to help save lives until the age of 81, giving 1,173 blood. Harrison always expressed hope that someone would follow his example and break his record. James Harrison died in his sleep at the age of 88 at a nursing home in New South Wales.
