📝 Summary
Romania’s prosecutor general’s office has indicted presidential candidate Kalin Georgescu on six counts, including “acting against the constitutional order,” creating a pro-fascist organization, and promoting war crimes.
Georgescu is also accused of propagating “racist or xenophobic ideas, concepts or doctrines,” providing false information, and “establishing an anti-Semitic organization.” The Romanian agency Agerpres, having studied the data on the website of the supervisory authority, drew attention to the fact that it is officially reported only about the opening of a criminal case “against an individual” without specifying personal data to Georgescu. The politician will be under judicial supervision for two months. In turn, Mediafax reported that the investigation has records of telephone conversations, which, in the opinion of the Prosecutor’s office, contain incriminating materials. On February 26, Georgescu was taken for questioning to the prosecutor’s office in the framework of the case of illegal campaign financing. Prior to that, in a number of settlements of Romania, searches were conducted at persons associated with Georgescu. In the elections on November 24, 2024, Georgescu became the leader of the first round, gaining 22.94% of the vote. A number of experts attribute the success of the politician to his election campaign, conducted mainly on the TikTok platform. On December 6, the Romanian Constitutional Court annulled the vote, citing violations. The Supreme Court rejected Georgescu's appeal, after which his supporters went to protest. Re-election of the head of state in Romania is scheduled for May.
