VIII International Lenten Choral Festival opened in Moscow

The tradition of holding concerts of sacred music during Lent appeared in St. Petersburg in the XVIII century. Today, this custom is continued by participants of the International Lenten Choral Festival. The eighth in a row, it opened with a concert in the Rachmaninoff Hall of the Conservatory. For the first time sounds "We will return soon" to the poems of the participant of the Great Patriotic War, poet Joseph Utkin performed by the Academic Grand Choir "Master of Choral Singing" radio "Orpheus". “I composed the work myself, it is a cycle. Some poems were written after the First World War, some during the Second World War, its cycle is called “We will return soon”, it is optimistic, says the artistic director of the festival, People’s Artist of Russia Lev Kontorovich. More premieres of modern authors: master Valery Kikta and young pianist and composer Tatiana Shatkovskaya. They are performed by the Chamber Choir of the Moscow Conservatory. “This concentration through music, through immersion in the beautiful gives us a distraction from all everyday problems and tune in to a conversation with God,” says art director and conductor-head of the Association of Folk and Choral Collectives of the Russian Music Union Alexander Solovyov. In the program and works of one of the pillars of sacred music – Pavel Chesnokov. They came to perform the Tula State Choir. “He is a follower of Lviv, to follow the Arkhangelsk, he at the turn of the century carried Orthodox culture not only in the church, but became the property of all,” said the chief conductor of the Tula State Choir Alexei Zaitsev. Not only because of the big date – this year marks the 185th anniversary of Tchaikovsky’s birth, his works are performed at the festival. The composer first turned to spiritual music when he wrote the opera Eugene Onegin. His first Orthodox work, “Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom”, sounds at the opening. The spiritual heritage of Tchaikovsky and the continuation of his traditions will be the topic of the round table, which will be held as part of the Lenten Festival. The main task of the show – it will last until April 4 – is to popularize domestic sacred music, which contributes to patriotic education. And, of course, enriches.
