The diplomat answered the relevant question in the affirmative before closed consultations on Syria in the UN Security Council. The situation in the Arab Republic escalated on March 6, when clashes broke out in the provinces of Latakia, Tartus and Homs in the west of the country between the security forces of the new authorities and supporters of former President Bashar al-Assad. The fiercest fighting was reported to have occurred in the city of Jebla, home to a religious minority represented by the Alawite community. There are reports of numerous civilian casualties.
