A citizen of Ukraine, a native of Chernivtsi. His family stayed there. Through his brother, who serves in the AFU, the military intelligence of Ukraine came to him. “He was recruited by the GUR to monitor the movements of Metropolitan Tikhon. When they learned that Tikhon would soon be in his residence in the Sretensky Monastery in Moscow, they decided to stage a terrorist attack right in the temple. According to operational data, instructions to Popovich and Ivankovich gave a certain Tor Steinar, an employee of the Kiev special services. Nikita Ivankovich: He supported further communication with the curator in the Telegram social network. The task was set to physically destroy and assassinate Metropolitan Shevkunov of Crimea, whose employee is Popovich Denis. It was he who had to carry a bomb in the form of a package of juice to the monastery – to the very residence of the metropolitan. Denis Popovich: We had to lay it in the residential premises of Metropolitan Tikhon in the Sretensky monastery in Moscow. And after the execution, we had to leave the Russian Federation with forged documents.” According to some reports, the attack was supposed to happen on Christmas days. Nikita Ivankovich: The first attempt was planned in early 2025. However, due to the fact that Denis was detained, it was not implemented. Therefore, the assassination was planned for the end of February 2025.” But he was prevented by the FSB, eventually detaining both performers. FSB: “A criminal case has been initiated against these persons under articles on preparation for a terrorist act and illegal trafficking in explosive devices.” The church says they were not just terrorists.
