The former commander of the 58th Army, Major General Ivan Popov, accused of fraud, together with the defense appealed against the tightening of the preventive measure from house arrest to detention. This was told by the lawyer of the suspect Sergey Buinovsky.
According to the lawyer, changing the preventive measure is “illegal and unreasonable”. He said that the court of first instance helped the prosecution to collect evidence to tighten the measure, thus violating not only the Criminal Procedure Code of the Russian Federation, but also articles of the law on the status of judges, which prohibits interference in the activities of judges. Also, the defense of the general believes that the Tambov Garrison Military Court illegally held a meeting on tightening the measure in closed mode. According to Bunovsky, "open trial is one of the means of maintaining public confidence in the court." The Tambov garrison military court decided to send Popov to jail on February 28. The meeting was held in private. The reason for the change in the preventive measure was that the defendant refused to undergo medical examination during a trip from Tambov to Moscow, when he was stopped by traffic police officers. Popov was arrested in the spring of 2024. In July, he was placed under house arrest. The major-general is accused of fraud on an especially large scale and official forgery.
