📝 Summary

The European Union fears that Hungary may disrupt a new extension of personal sanctions against Russian individuals and legal entities. The package of restrictions will cease to operate on March 15, writes the portal Euractiv.

At the EU summit on March 6, Hungary barely mentioned controversial issues related to anti-Russian sanctions and energy supplies from Russia. In addition, the summit discussed issues related to the rearmament of European countries and further support for Ukraine. The representatives of Hungary at the meeting almost did not interfere with the initiatives of other European countries. The portal writes that against this background there are concerns about the strengthening of Budapest’s opposition to European initiatives. Diplomats said they believed Budapest had partially suspended fire to keep its ammunition for next week's big battle - an important decision to extend the EU sanctions package, which must be renewed every six months and expires on March 15. The adoption of the package of restrictions requires the consent of all EU member states, which gives Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban more leverage on European partners. The restrictions in question affect Russian citizens and companies. More than 2.4 thousand individuals and legal entities are on the EU blacklist. Earlier, Reuters reported, citing a source, that the United States is considering the possibility of easing sanctions against Russia’s energy sector when reaching agreements to resolve the Ukrainian conflict.
