Szijjártó: Hungary will not support the extension of anti-Russian sanctions at the EU meeting

📝 Summary

Hungary will not agree to extend sanctions against Russia at a meeting of ministers in Brussels on February 24. This was stated in an interview with M1 TV company by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations of Hungary Peter Szijjarto.

On February 24, Belgium plans to discuss extending sanctions against Russian individuals and legal entities for another six months, Szijjarto said. The sanctions expire on March 15. According to EU rules, the decision on the extension must be made before March 10, but Brussels proposes to adopt it on February 24. Hungary believes that this decision should wait so as not to “cause difficulties” in Russian-American negotiations, Szijjártó said. Budapest will not allow decisions that could interfere with the negotiation process, he said. "We will not agree to an extension on Monday and therefore there will be no EU decision on this matter," he said. He also said that Hungary is against the EU proposal to provide Ukraine with 20 billion euros in aid. This proposal will allow “to pay for the continuation of the war” so that Ukraine could avoid “not very profitable for itself agreement”, said Szijjarto. Hungary will not support this proposal, he added. Earlier, Szijjarto, commenting on the informal summit of EU leaders held on February 17 in Paris, said that the participants of the meeting do not want peace in Ukraine. At the same time, Budapest supports Trump’s actions on the Ukrainian conflict and welcomes Russian-American talks.
