📝 Summary

Hungary intends to seek the lifting of EU sanctions against a number of Russian citizens if restrictions against them are extended for another six months. This was stated by the head of the Hungarian foreign Ministry Peter Szijjarto.

After a meeting with EU foreign ministers in Brussels, he recalled that individual EU sanctions against a group of Russian individuals and legal entities will expire on March 15. Brussels wants to extend them for another six months, a decision must be made before March 10. Budapest proposes not to rush, pointing out that after the beginning of Russian-American contacts on the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, much has changed. “There are people on this sanctions list who should not actually be there, and we have compiled a list of them and recommend removing them from the sanctions list,” Szijjártó told TASS news agency. The Hungarian foreign minister noted that his country opposes the extension of EU sanctions against Russian individuals and legal entities, since the EU has not yet fulfilled its promise to guarantee Budapest’s energy security. In particular, Hungary did not participate in negotiations with the participation of the European Commission, Ukraine and Slovakia on the possible resumption of Russian gas transit through Ukrainian territory. Earlier, the head of EU diplomacy Kaja Kallas said that the European Union will prepare the 17th package of anti-Russian sanctions.
