Banners decorated the squares of the Uprising, Labor, Palace Square, Nevsky and Ligovsky Prospects. Before the holiday, the city was decorated with light projections: portraits of famous Russian military leaders and admirals Suvorov, Kutuzov, Nakhimov and Ushakov. “Today, we attach special importance to the continuity of generations, honoring and supporting our veterans and warriors defending our country today,” Alexander Beglov, Governor of St. Petersburg, told TASS. In the Military Historical Museum of Artillery, Engineers and Communications Forces, visitors learned how to make soldiers and got acquainted with the contents of the soldier's bag of the Great Patriotic War. And in the Hermitage, military melodies were performed by the brass orchestra of the St. Petersburg Music School named after M. P. Mussorgsky. The museum-reserve "Russia in the Great War" made on this day free entrance to the War Chamber, where the exposition dedicated to the First World War is located. Defender of the Fatherland Day was established by the federal law "On Days of Military Glory of Russia" on March 13, 1995. Since 1923, on the basis of the order of the Revolutionary Military Council on February 23, the Red Army and Navy Day was officially celebrated in the Soviet Union.
