The bay near Cape Panagia was created for several reasons. It prevented the oil from spreading when the stern of the Volgoneft-239 tanker leaked. Mazut with the help of boom fences was held off the coast and collected by excavators while paving the way to the stern. In addition, the shaft has become a technical road. It allowed to drive close to the stern and pump oil out of the tanks, and then dismantle the ship. As Vesti Sochi previously wrote, the Volgoneft-239 tanker crashed in the Kerch Strait on December 15, 2024. The stern of the ship ran aground near Cape Panagia.
