Russia and the United States have requested urgent closed consultations in the UN Security Council on the situation in Syria. This was announced by the First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the world organization Dmitry Polyansky.
The request was sent in connection with the facts of violence against civilians in the West of the Arab Republic. “We expect that the Danish chairmanship of the Council will appoint them (consultations – approx. ed.) at 10.00 New York (17.00 Moscow time) on March 10,” Polyansky wrote on the Telegram channel. Clashes between the security forces of the new Syrian authorities and supporters of President Bashar al-Assad began on March 6 in the provinces of Latakia, Tartus and Homs in the west of the country. The fiercest fighting took place in the city of Jebla, home to a religious minority represented by the Alawite community. According to the latest TASS data, since the escalation of the situation, 250 armed supporters of Assad have died, and the security forces subordinate to the new authorities of the country lost 231 fighters. The number of civilians killed exceeded 800, many of them were Alawites. Russian military personnel in the country sheltered civilians at the Khmeimim base.
